Agile Tools

Posted in Main by tbeck on September 12th, 2006

I came across Buildix this morning which is ThoughtWorks’ version of the “Agile development platform on a disk”. I commend them for getting a single platform together that combines project management, collaboration, source control etc, all in one, but yet again, it shows how un-agile Agile is. They are sending a message that _this_ is the way to do Agile development. If you aren’t using _this_ particular set of tools, then you aren’t Agile. This is yet another sign that Agile does not mean actually being agile.

As an example, I don’t use svn, even for rails development. Are you shocked? Well, you shouldn’t be. I’ve been using cvs for years and never had an issue with it. It suits my work fine. I don’t need to switch to svn because that is the Agile thing to do.

And I’m not the only one. Former colleagues of mine still use cvs too, in large part to the lack of cvs module support in svn. (I don’t want to get into a debate here, but svn:externals is not a replacement for cvs modules. Check the svn mailing list, in particular here if you want to see what I mean by cvs modules).

Here’s another sign that Agile is not agile. The fact that you can make a diagram of the “Agile Work effort” is bizarre. But I guess that’s why there’s so much money in Agile and none in pliancy.

“If you aren’t using _this_ particular set of tools, then you aren’t Agile.” … um, that’s a stretch, IMO. I don’t get that vibe from their page.

Its not the page. It is the whole idea that we can wrap Agile software development up in one neat little package that always works. As the for page, I don’t see YMMV anywhere on the site. I’m not saying that this is _the_ major cause of un-agile Agile. I’m just saying it is a sign. For people who aren’t familiar with Agile this could be misleading. That’s all.
