Agile Ambiguity

Posted in Main by tbeck on August 22nd, 2006

The fact that I can’t figure out what the heck the Agile Manifesto signers believe as a group is telling. Some say Agile is a marketing term while others are saying stuff that I completely agree with and sounds more like PSD, or what I thought Agile was originally all about. Here’s another quote from a recent interview with Ward Cunningham that gives me hope.

It is very important as a professional to be able to observe and absorb technique from peers. An amateur can say, “I only do things my way.” A professional must be able to say, “Let’s try your way for a while and see what happens.”

I’m still confused why the Agile folks can’t seem to agree with each other though.

This is what happens when you have any group of sufficient size. It isn’t exactly proof that Agile is dead, or is a useless idea.

“Sounds more like PSD”?? You meant to say, PSD sounds more like Agile?

Agile (with the capital A) is definately alive and well, but may or may not (depending on who you talk to) mean the same thing as agile (small a) and PSD. Quotes like the ones from Cunningham and Thomas sound like PSD, as opposed to quotes from others in the Agile community, along with the marketers and all the attitude from Agilers on the ground which doesn’t sound remotely like PSD.

Other than Ward, other founding members don’t seem as open to others ideas and operate in somewhat of a closed circle.

Dave Thomas has said some things as well. Plus I’ve always liked his pragmatic approach. But, yeah, other than that, I guess there’s not many being truly agile.
