Pliant Development: Don't Do It

Impressionism Parallels

Posted in Main by tbeck on August 1st, 2006.

Jason Gorman has a draft of an article discussing the rise of post-agilism, or pliant software development or whatever you want to call it. Jason points out some striking similarities between the rise and evolution of the impressionist movement in the 19th century and the rise and apparent evolutionary path that Agile software development is on.

Setting aside for a moment the still-open debate about whether Satie was a precursor to Debussy, I like the parallel Gorman draws. As agile thinking becomes more and more mainstreamed, people are apt to start wondering what all the fuss is about. I look forward to the day when we don’t need buzzwords like “agile” because the IT industry is using effective practices routinely. When that happens, don’t expect a Thank You from the converted. I suspect they won’t even realize their thinking has changed.

I’ve noticed that very phenomenon on a small scale where I work. I share an anecdote about how agile thinking has bled over into a traditional group, and how they don’t even realize they have changed, in this post, for whatever it’s worth.
